With my dad being a board certified ophthalmologist, eye care has always been very important in our family. There were a few very specific tips that we had to abide by. Don’t share eye makeup, make sure to wash your makeup brushes regularly, and most important, wear sunglasses.
Ever since I started wearing sunglasses almost every time I go outside, I can’t go out without them. There are very few times (pictures only) that I take them off.
There are really good reasons to wear them and how to pick a good pair. Here are a few:
1. You can see better!
Most simply, sunglasses will reduce the glare of the sun and you will be able to see better. The better you can see, the more you can enjoy the views of the beautiful outdoors. Even on a cloudy day.
2. Sunglasses protect your eyes form the elements.
Have you ever noticed that you get dirt or dust in your eyes more often when the wind blows? Sunglasses are a great way to prevent that. The sand, wind, and dust can scratch the outer layer of your eye, the cornea, which can be permanent. The snow also, while soft, increases the strength of UV because it is reflective and can give you “snow blindness.” So while it may be summer, you can find a good pair now to wear on your next ski trip!
3. Sunglasses help prevent certain eye diseases.
Too much exposure to UV rays from the sun can lead to cataracts, macular degeneration, and others. These result in blurriness or loss of sight.
4. You may have fewer headaches.
If you are someone who has headaches that are triggered by bright light, this is a great way to take control and be able to enjoy life more.
5. Not all sunglasses are equal.
While there are a number of options out there, be sure to pick up a pair that say they are polarized. This may limit the fun glass color options, but your eyes will thank you. The polarization is what blocks out the UV rays and protects your eyes the most. If they aren't polarized, you may have the option to change out the lenses. I choose my sunglasses based on the ability to change out the lenses and put in polarized ones with my prescription level. This makes them more expensive, so I tend to invest in one new pair every few years.
Be sure to have fun! Sunglasses make a great statement accessory. There are different shapes, sizes, and colors, all at varying price points.
Here are a few of my favorites from this season.
