A Unique and Meaningful Jewish Wedding Breaking the Glass Tradition

I was interested in a unique and mindful way to fulfill the breaking of a glass at our wedding. Along with commemorating the destruction of the temple, the broken glass is also a beautiful reminder of how our (the bride and grooms) souls were separated when we were born. Now that we are married, our souls are reunited and we celebrate the reconnection and how our separation made us stronger and a more connected couple.

This part of the ceremony is so exciting as it’s the last part to the marriage ceremony. As soon as the glass is broken we al burst out in singing! How could I hold on to that feeling forever? I’ve seen mezuzas, shabbos candles, and chanukiot with holders for the glass shards. But I wanted something different.

Well, I found it. Or I should say that it found me.

A couple of months before, I received an email from our Rabbi about a special opportunity. A Jewish glass artist in Boulder Colorado, BGold Glass has made to order glass. The best part was that we could go to his studio after the wedding and incorporate the shards into a new work of art. How special is that?!

That was exactly what we did. A few weeks after our wedding, we went to Boulder and Cody had his first glass blowing lesson. With the help of Bryan, I had a new beautiful floral vase that had melted shards from the glass Cody had broken. That vase sits on our shabbos table each week and on nearly every holiday table.

Bryan was so wonderful. He explained everything. Went over various Jewish traditions and beliefs. He involved us both as much as we wanted. My aunt and uncle even took part.

I highly recommend that anyone who is local to Colorado to consider this activity. Anyone who is out of state can mail back their shards and Bryan will make something for you. Other ideas he had was a glass for kiddush or a honey jar for Rosh Hashanah. There’s so many options.

If you have the option in doing this, it is a wonderful opportunity.

Mazal Tov on your upcoming wedding!

xoxo,

Shana Bryn
